As the role of science and technology increases in modern society, the need for science studies is growing. Responding to this need, SNU has established the Department of Science Studies within the College of Natural Sciences in effect creating an institutional foundation for international level research activities in the field.

Cultural Diversity and Social Contribution: SNU’s SHANUM
SNU is increasingly becoming populated with people from various nationalities and backgrounds. In response to these changes, a diverse coalition of SNU members have been contributing to the community through the SHANUM (SNU + nanum, “sharing” in Korean) Multicultural Society for Social Responsibility.

Hydrogel-based strong and fast actuators by electroosmotic turgor pressure
A research team led by Sun, Jeong-Yun of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Kim, Ho-Young of the Department of Mechanical Engineering announced that they have developed hydrogel actuators that can produce enough strength to break bricks in a short time.

A research team led by Kang, Kisuk and Park, Jung Won of the College of Engineering revealed a synthetic secret of high-Ni cathode materials that are attracting worldwide attention as the next-generation cathode material for lithium-ion batteries and identified the cause of low-quality synthesis.
