2020년 졸업생 여러분, 학부모 여러분, 그리고 축하의 자리에 온라인으로 함께 하시는 모든 참석자 여러분, 서울대학교 졸업식에 오신 것을 환영합니다.

 지난 2월 코로나19 바이러스의 확산으로 봄철 졸업식을 취소했을 때, 8월에는 사정이 나아져서 가을 졸업식은 정상적으로 할 수 있기를 희망하였습니다. 그러나 코로나19 바이러스 감염증이 세계적 대유행으로 발전하고 있어 이번까지 비대면 졸업식으로 치르게 되었습니다. 여러분 모두 일생의 가장 행복하고 뿌듯할 기념식을 동영상으로 대신하게 되어 섭섭하리라 생각합니다. 얼굴을 맞대고 눈빛을 교환하며 여러분을 직접 축하하지 못하는 제 마음도 섭섭하고 미안합니다.

 그러나 졸업식은 역시 경사입니다. 2020년 서울대학교 학사, 석사, 박사 졸업생 여러분. 여러분의 졸업을 진심으로 축하합니다. 유학의 어려움을 이겨내고 이 자리에 참석하신 국제 학생들에게도 박수를 보냅니다. 졸업생들을 지켜봐 주시고 격려를 아끼지 않으신 가족과 친지 여러분께도 감사와 축하를 드립니다. 무사히 학위 과정을 잘 마칠 수 있도록 지원해 주신 교수님들과 직원 여러분, 그리고 동문 여러분께도 이 자리를 빌려 깊이 감사드립니다.

 우리는 지금 재난의 한 가운데에 있습니다. 이미 삶의 방식이 빠르게 변하는 가운데, 전문가들은 코로나19 이후 세계가 과거와 근본적으로 달라질 것이라고 예측하고 있습니다. 모든 것이 불확실한 지금 졸업을 맞이하는 여러분은 기쁨과 뿌듯함만큼이나 불안과 염려 또한 느끼실 것입니다. 지금까지 강의실에서, 도서관에서, 실험실에서, 연습실에서 세상에 나아갈 준비를 해왔지만, 급변하는 세상 앞에서 앞으로 과연 무엇을 해야 할지 새삼 두려움을 느낄 수도 있을 것입니다. 여러분의 선배들과는 달리 여러분은 누구도 겪어보지 못했고 아무도 예측하지 못한 세상을 마주하고 있습니다.

 그러나 너무 불안해하지 마십시오. 여러분은 서울대학교에서의 마지막 학기에 발생한 코로나19 감염증을 포함해서 모든 어려움을 헤치고 극복했기에 이 자리에 참석할 자격을 갖추었습니다. 당장 세상을 상대할 모든 지식을 갖춘 것은 아니겠지만, 여러분은 이미 서울대에서 어려운 과제를 포기하지 않고 해내는 근성, 근원을 탐구하기 위해 질문을 멈추지 않는 지성, 다른 생각과 행동을 하는 사람과 함께 더 나은 세상을 꿈꾸는 공동체 의식을 익혔습니다. 누군가는 쉽게 대학 생활을 해 낸 듯이 보이고, 어떤 이는 힘들게 완주한 것처럼 보일 수도 있습니다. 그러나 여러분 모두가 서울대학교 학위과정을 완주한 자랑스러운 서울대인입니다. 남과의 경쟁보다 자신과의 싸움이 더 힘들었을 과정을 성공적으로 마쳤기에, 여러분은 앞으로 밖에서 마주할 어떠한 난제들도 풀어내고 대응할 능력을 이미 갖추었다고 말해 주고 싶습니다. 이 졸업식은 여러분들이 자신을 믿고 당당히 세상에 도전할 자격이 있음을 인증해 주는 행사입니다.

 지금 우리 사회에서는 그동안 외면했던 여러 갈등이 일제히 터져 나오며 해결되지 못하고 분열이 끊이지 않고 있습니다. 흑백논리와 편 가르기가 만연한 가운데, 쏟아지는 주장들 속에서 어떤 입장을 취하는 것이 올바른 것인지 판단하기 쉽지 않은 경우도 많습니다. 당부하건대, 어려울 때마다 우리 학교의 표어, ‘진리는 나의 빛 (VERITAS LUX MEA)’을 떠올리시기 바랍니다. 갈등과 혼란 속에서도 자료를 기반으로 엄밀하게 분석하고 타당하게 추론하면 정당하고 옳은 판단을 내릴 수 있습니다. 쉼 없이 질문하고 회의(懷疑)하십시오. 더 견고한 견해, 더 타당한 설명, 더 설득력 있는 해석을 추구하는 자세가 혼란을 헤쳐 나가는 데 도움을 줄 것입니다.

 갈등이 만연한 우리사회에서는 지금 그 어느 때보다 협력하고 화합할 줄 아는 인재가 필요합니다. 저는 여러분이 편 가르기에 가담하여 우리 사회의 갈등을 증폭하기보다, 다른 의견을 가진 사람들과 협력하고 화합하여 갈등을 한 단계 높은 차원에서 해소할 수 있는 슬기로운 사람이 되기를 바랍니다. 여러분은 서울대학교에서 습득한 지식과 자세를 발판으로 그런 사람으로 성장할 수 있습니다.

 졸업생 여러분, 이제 세상을 보듬는 따뜻한 마음으로, 진실을 추구하는 자세로, 혁신과 창의의 정신으로, 그리고 화합의 지도력으로 미래를 개척하고 세상을 밝혀 주십시오. 대학 교정을 떠나 세상이라는 더 큰 학교에서 자유, 평화, 정의의 인류 보편의 가치를 추구하고 세계 시민으로서의 인권 감수성을 갖춘 지성으로 성장하기를 멈추지 마시기 바랍니다. 앞으로 사람들이 서울대학교를 졸업했기 때문에 여러분을 부러워하기보다, 여러분이 서울대학교를 다녔다는 사실로 서울대가 대한민국을 넘어 세계 최고의 명문대학으로 인정받도록 해 주십시오.

 졸업생 여러분, 그 동안 수고 많으셨습니다. 아주 잘 해 내셨습니다. 저와 우리 교직원들은 앞으로 여러분이 더 나은 세상을 만드는 데 맨 앞에 서 있기를 온 마음으로 응원하겠습니다. 여러분들이 지금까지 해왔듯이 열심히 하면 반드시 원하는 대로 이룰 수 있을 것입니다. 다시 한 번 축하드립니다.

 

Dear graduates of the Class of 2020, parents, and guests. Welcome to the Seoul National University graduation ceremony.

 When we had to cancel the winter graduation ceremony in February due to COVID-19, we were hoping to hold the summer graduation ceremony in August. However, as COVID-19 has developed into a global pandemic, the decision was made to hold this graduation ceremony online. It must be disappointing that one of your life’s happiest and most fulfilling ceremonies has been replaced with a video. I am deeply sorry and regretful for not being able to congratulate you in person.

 Nevertheless, this graduation ceremony marks one of the most joyous occasions this year. First, I offer my most heartfelt congratulations to the class of 2020 graduates who have completed their undergraduate, masters, doctoral programs. In particular, I would like to recognize the efforts of our international students who have overcome the difficulties of studying abroad. I also want to congratulate and thank family members and friends who have supported our students. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the faculty, staff, and alumni for helping our graduates to complete their studies.

 We are in the midst of a crisis. Experts predict that the world will be fundamentally different after COVID-19. In fact, our way of life has already begun to change rapidly. At this moment of uncertainties, you may feel anxiety as much as you feel joy and pride, as you are about to graduate. So far, you have been preparing for the world in the lecture hall, in the library, in the lab, and in the practice room. However, facing a world changing rapidly, you may be afraid or uncertain of what to do. Unlike your seniors, you are facing a world that no one has experienced or foreseen.

 However, there is no need to be anxious. You are more than qualified to be present here at this moment, because you have overcome all your prior difficulties, including the pandemic that occurred while you were finishing your last semester at the University. You may not have all the necessary knowledge to deal with the world right now, but at Seoul National University you have already honed: the guts to succeed without giving up on difficult tasks; the intelligence to never stop questioning in your search for truth; the sense of community with which you dream of making a better world with people from various backgrounds. Some students may have seemed to make it through the program easily; some may have apparently needed to put in more effort to finish. Whatever the case may be, all of you stand proudly as Seoul National University students who have completed your degree programs at SNU. Considering that you have successfully wrestled with internal conflict-a process often deemed harder than competing against others-I would like to assure you that you already have the ability to solve and respond to whatever challenges you face in the outside world. This graduation ceremony certifies that you deserve to trust yourself and that you can boldly take on the world.

 Nowadays, long-neglected problems are bursting out everywhere in our society, and the failure to resolve them is leading to endless strife. Amidst black-and-white logic and disputes, it may not be easy to determine the right way to uphold justice and excellence. I would like to ask you that, at each moment of difficulty, you recall our school’s motto, Veritas Lux Mea. Even in confusion and uncertainty, critical analysis and reasoning will lead you to the right path. Do not cease to question and reflect; you will earn a more robust view, a more valid explanation, and a more persuasive interpretation, and these will guide you through the current era of confusion.

 In this critical time, when conflicts and antagonism are worsening, our society needs talented individuals capable of cooperating and harmonizing. It is my sincere wish that you will be a prudent person who can resolve conflicts at a higher level by cooperating and harmonizing with people with different opinions, rather than engaging in further polarizing our society and amplifying the existing conflicts. I believe that the knowledge and attitude you have acquired at SNU will serve as valuable assets to your growth.

 Dear graduates, with your warm hearts embracing the world, a thirst for truth, the spirit of innovation and creativity, and leadership through and for harmony, please forge ahead to pioneer the future and brighten the world. Please do not stop pursuing the universal values of liberty, peace, and justice in the larger world beyond our university campus; constantly develop yourselves as intellectuals and global citizens with sensitivity for human rights. I hope that one day the fact that you attended SNU would verify our university as one of the most prestigious schools in the world.

 Dear graduates, you have worked hard and you have done very well. Our faculty and staff members and I wish you the best with all our hearts, and we hope that you will be at the forefront of building a better world. If you continue to strive as you have done so far, you will surely be able to achieve your aims.

 And once more, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to you all on your graduation.
